For Educators

A field trip to the Greenville County Museum of Art provides an exciting way to enhance your curriculum and expand student learning. Designed to make grade-level connections to curriculum, GCMA tours can be customized to meet the requests of teachers.

Docent-guided school group tours are offered on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, typically last 45 minutes to an hour, and are free of charge. To arrange a tour, please email education@gcma.org or call 864.271.7570 x. 1017, at least three weeks before your requested date.

Take a Closer Look: Close Reading and Visual Art as Text
South Carolina Common Core standards address “close reading” skills, which enable readers to uncover layers of meaning in text that lead to deeper comprehension. By placing emphasis on the observation skills necessary to be a thorough reader, visual art offers a powerful strategy for practicing this skill.

Upon request, your GCMA tour can include an opportunity for students to practice reading visual text, addressing the following skills: identifying key ideas, articulating supporting details, highlighting artist choices, and arriving at an understanding of the image as a whole. GCMA Education staff will plan with teachers to select paintings that will best support current or ongoing areas of study.
