Exhibition | Will Henry Stevens: The Flowering of Southern Abstraction

Oct 18, 2013 — Dec 29, 2013

Will Henry Stevens (1881- 1949) was born in Vevay, Indiana, and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy before going to work as a tile designer at Rookwood Pottery. In 1906 Stevens resumed his studies at the Art Students League with William Merritt Chase in New York before accepting a teaching job in Louisville, Kentucky. Soon after, he took a faculty post at Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, where he taught from 1921 until his retirement in 1948. Inspired by his lifelong love of nature, Stevens found abundant subject matter in both the bayous of Louisiana and in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.
