Exhibition | Generations: N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth — Featuring Loans from the Estate of Frank E. Fowler, Lookout Mountain, TN

Oct 22, 2025 — Continuing

Generations: N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth celebrates the lineage of one of America’s most distinguished artistic families. The selection is drawn from the estate of Frank E. Fowler, who represented Wyeth family artists for more than fifty years, and is supplemented by complementary examples from the GCMA collection.

Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), regarded as one of the most important American artists of the 20th century, launched his career in 1937 with a sold-out exhibition of his watercolors in New York. On the occasion of the young painter’s remarkable debut, his father and mentor, noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) wrote him a congratulatory letter prophesying, “You are headed in the direction that should finally reach the pinnacle in American art.”

Following in the footsteps of his father, Andrew Wyeth carried forward N.C. Wyeth’s deep connection to place and storytelling — a tradition that continued into the next generation through his son, Jamie.

Representing the third generation of this family, James Browning Wyeth (born 1946) continues his family’s artistic legacy while forging a distinct vision rooted in observation and imagination. An American realist painter, his expressive portraits, coastal landscapes, and ironic depictions of animals blend meticulous detail with a sense of narrative drama.
