Originally conceived as a mash-up of the Greenville County Museum of Art's 1970 exhibition and publication project titled Contemporary Artists of South Carolina and photographer Jerry Siegel's 2012 book Facing South: Portraits of Southern Artists (a co-publication of the University of Alabama Press and the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University), At This Moment is a testament to the wealth of talent and genius that has been fostered, cultivated, and inspired by South Carolina for more than 75 years.
A lifelong southerner himself, photographer Jerry Siegel is known for his ability to empathetically connect with subjects from all walks of life. In this exhibition, Siegel captures a total of 78 artists, including Sigmund Abeles, Shepard Fairey, Pearl Fryar, Jonathan Green, Mary Jackson, Jasper Johns, Grainger McKoy, George Read, Brian Rutenberg, Leo Twiggs, and Mary Whyte.
In the catalog that accompanies the exhibition, Eleanor Heartney writes, At This Moment reveals how art created in South Carolina can be seen as a microcosm of artistic trends and tendencies that exist on a global scale. The artists pictured here utilize diverse media, sources, genres, materials, and conceptual approaches to art. They share a steadfast devotion to their ideas and craft."
